My Thoughts on #GamerGate

I’ve been thinking about writing down some thoughts on this rather inflammatory subject for a while, but steered clear of it because of the almost inevitable flak it draws to those that write about it, and because I thought it would fade away after a couple of weeks. Well, it hasn’t, and I’ve been reminded that some of the things done in the name of this “movement” are inexcusable, and those responsible need to be called out for their behaviour – by as many people as possible.

Depending on how this post is received, I may remove it – I’m not here to start a war with either side, so let’s try and keep this civil shall we?

Thoughts on PUG in MMO’s

Long time no post! I’ve been lost in the wilderness outside of the Cantina for a while now, caught up in the winds of work and fatherhood, but something has drawn me back, something has prompted me to sit still long enough to write some words here. And that something is Destiny.

destiny

Don’t worry, this won’t be another addition to the Internet’s slew of reviews, praises, or criticisms of the game – I’m saving that for another post – this is just some observations on the raids/strikes, and their counterparts in other MMO’s.

The “All You Need Is Kill” movie is no longer called that. It’s now “Edge of Tomorrow”.

As the title says, the movie has had it’s name changed. I could gripe about this, but I won’t, because it’s new title is actually pretty cool, and does read slightly smoother for us Westerners than the original.

It also has a trailer, included after the jump. Also included after the jump is me griping about stuff related to this trailer…

Guest stars of the month…

A little while ago, I wrote a quick piece about the ‘Guest Stars of the Month’.

I thought I’d follow that up with some random thoughts on some particularly good guest stars I’ve seen lately.

carrieprestonCarrie Preston
Most will know Carrie Preston from her recurring role in ‘True Blood’, but she has been appearing in a few shows over the past year or so, most notably ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘Person of Interest’.  Both of these appearances have shown she is a far greater actress than ‘True Blood’ indicated (which was already good).

Curtis Armstrong
Once, mainly known for being ‘Bert Viola’ in ‘Moonlighting’, he has been in loads of things over the years.  Now appearing as ‘Metatron’ in Supernatural.

magda-apanowicz

Magda Apanowicz
After appearing as a series regular in ‘Caprica’, not much has been seen of her (we’ll ignore that short run on ‘Hellcats’), but a new recurring role in ‘Continuum’ is a welcome return to mainstream tv.  Has also appeared in some Team Unicorn projects in the past couple of years too, so more interesting things could appear.

denisohare

Denis O’Hare
‘Russell Edgington’ of ‘True Blood’, but also has recurring appearances in ‘The Good Wife’.  A great actor.

tina-majorino

Tina Majorino
Hopefully, she will appear in the ‘Veronica Mars’ film, but if she doesn’t, then her recent role on Greys Anatomy, where she has really been making her mark, should keep her on the way up.

Amy-Acker
Amy Acker
Always great, she has continued to keep the quality up throughout this season on ‘Person of Interest’.

timothybusfield

Timothy Busfield
Been around for ever, but it’s always good to see him appear in stuff.  Most recently in ‘Revolution’.

patrick Flueger

Patrick Flueger
I’ve not seen much of him since ‘The 4400’, so good to see him back again.

felicia

Felicia Day
It’s Supernatural. It’s Felicia Day. It’s great.

So, Doctor Who returned…

DW Banner

Doctor Who returns once again and in a follow up to my previous post, I thought I’d give it some kind of mark out of ten, using a completely flawed and nonsensical system!  Just for fun, obviously.

So, if we assume that ten is the mark for a perfect episode, and starting from a base of zero, let’s assign some scores to parts of our equation:

Expectation =   +8
As I said in my previous article, I keep watching, hoping that it will give me the show I want.

Loss of Karen Gillan = -3
While the character of Amy Pond could be highly irritating, it was Karen Gillan.

Loss of Arthur Darvill = -1
Good actor, not so good character, but he had his place.

Addition of Jenna-Louise Coleman = +3
Positive start. Let’s see how this progresses.

Story = -1
Based on the expectation of a story worth 8 points, this was ok, but had a few too many things that irked.

Villains = -1
Purely for the “we could stop him now” exchange, there has to be a demerit for that!

Appearance of Richard E. Grant = +1
It’s Richard E. Grant. he should be in everything.

Overall score = 6
A fairly good start, with a not too bad episode, but there are improvements to be made!  Her response of “something awesome”, when asked what she wants to see first, in the ‘next time’ bit at the end, was a little worrying; would she not have something specific in mind if she’d been thinking about travelling for so long?

Anyway, all foolishness aside, a solid return!
