Merry Geekmas: Attire

So, your nerd cave is looking pretty festive now, what with your dying pine tree being adorned with all manner of sparkly goodness and a strange incarnation of Santa with the body of a Horse, but what about you? You’re still there, wearing your drab non-festive clothes that you wear all year ’round. Let’s festivise (may or may not be an actual word) you!

Merry Geekmas: Tree Decorations

Even here in the dim booths and alcoves of this seedy cantina, ‘tis apparently the season. The season for eating too much, drinking too much, spending too much, and decorating slowly dying trees with shiny bits of plastic and flashing lights. Traditionally Christmas isn’t a very geeky time, but we’re a very pervasive culture, and now your Christmas time can be (almost) as geeky as it is festive! So to kick things off in style, here are some of my favourite geek-themed Christmas decorations…

Shiny bits of plastic, slowly dying pine trees (or bits thereof), and ornaments of all types abound at Christmas. But what to do when you want your decorations to be a little bit… different? Well, how about this 8-Bit wreath? I have one myself, and I love it! Its retro gaming goodness sets the tone for visitors to your house over the festive period, and since it’s made of foam it doesn’t die after a few weeks like the traditional wreath would. Plus, it has LED’s. Everything is better with LED’s!

Christmas trees are a keystone on festive decorations, so it’s an obvious candidate for expressing our fandom love! There’s a lot of geek-inspired tree decorations, but how about having the Grand Master of the Jedi Order atop your dying pine tree? Yes, an illuminated Yoda can be the crowning glory of your festive tree!Yoda treetopper

For those who prefer to follow the adventures of that British institution, Dr Who, how about these little danglies (sorry, couldn’t resist!)? The supreme beings have never looked so charming or festive…

For the gamers, celebrate the rich heritage of awkwardly-shaped controllers that have contributed to your crippling carpal-tunnel syndrome with these brilliant controller silhouettes:

And here’s something a little different… It’s Father Christmas (who those damned Colonials insist on calling “Santa Clause”) in his ultimate form. That of a Centaur, Or, a Santaur, if you will:

Yes, that’s right, that is a half horse, half Santa tree ornament.

Ok, so your tree is looking pretty swish by now, but what about the rest of the festive… stuff? Well, that can wait for my next blog post….

My Thoughts on #GamerGate

I’ve been thinking about writing down some thoughts on this rather inflammatory subject for a while, but steered clear of it because of the almost inevitable flak it draws to those that write about it, and because I thought it would fade away after a couple of weeks. Well, it hasn’t, and I’ve been reminded that some of the things done in the name of this “movement” are inexcusable, and those responsible need to be called out for their behaviour – by as many people as possible.

Depending on how this post is received, I may remove it – I’m not here to start a war with either side, so let’s try and keep this civil shall we?

The “All You Need Is Kill” movie is no longer called that. It’s now “Edge of Tomorrow”.

As the title says, the movie has had it’s name changed. I could gripe about this, but I won’t, because it’s new title is actually pretty cool, and does read slightly smoother for us Westerners than the original.

It also has a trailer, included after the jump. Also included after the jump is me griping about stuff related to this trailer…
